Leslie Backus earned a BA from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Nova Southeastern University. She holds a certificate in Ethics and Excellence in Management from Florida International University's Institute of Government, and is accredited in public relations (APR).

Leslie was director of communications for the City of Fort Lauderdale, managing the City's Public Information Office for seven years. She served the City of Fort Lauderdale for more than 13 years in professional and managerial positions. She was a systems analyst for eight years in the Office Systems Division of Xerox Corporation in Fort Lauderdale and Coral Gables.

Active in civic and professional affairs, Leslie is a past president of the Gulfstream Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and current Sunshine District Treasurer. She has served as chapter treasurer and assembly delegate, representing the chapter at the society's international conference. She is a graduate of Leadership America and Leadership Broward.

Backus is currently president of the Broward Women's Alliance and secretary of the Tower Forum. Her volunteer activities include membership in Women’s Way of the United Way of Broward County and the marketing committee for the Broward Partnership for the Homeless.
